If you were bitten by the 'broken' rules of the Combat! series of games, you're in luck they learned their lessons well at Critical Hit. Make no mistake: this is not a simple nor an easy game! They've taken Hal Hock's dice-rolling-frenzy Magnum Opus and streamlined the game flow while sacrificing none of the attention to detail. It's everything ASL could have been: all the action, more than enough 'realism' for anyone, and only a fraction of the ridiculous mountain of rules. "This game (system) is, IMNSDHO, the One True Tactical Game. In fact, other games seem pretty easy to learn after playing ASL!!" I get surprised when people say things like, "It's a way of life." Or "It's the only game you can ever play if you want to play it." I play lots of other games. I don't have time for Tiddly Winks, let alone ASL.īest wargame ever. It's just that my "other games" right now include monsters like Case Blue and Devil's Cauldron. Again, I still stand by my comment that it is possible to play ASL and other games. However, I just don't play it much any more. If I'm ever stranded on a desert island, someone please airdrop this game to me and I'll be happy. "UPDATE Aug '08: I still feel that ASL is the best wargame ever made. I do it and have found the balance very helpful in improving my appreciation for the Game when I return." It is possible to devote yourself to ASL and play other games. A masterpiece, which has almost infinite replay value. I have been playing this game since 1976 when it first came out as Squad Leader. Talk about balance, life in a bottle my friends. What a rush of adrenaline when the first enemy Tiger brews up, only to be followed by your best leader getting killed as a consequence of the same dice roll. Each one is a Greek tragedy played out with the high and lows crashing down around the players.
The sense of accomplishment and the desire to improve are immediately felt by the player in every scenario. Nothing comes close to equaling it for drama, it is the benchmark for all other games, no matter the theme or system.
